Today I can swap the numbers in an addition and still get the same sum.

B Watch me, then you4 min

Ella has 5 green beads and Ben has 2 yellow beads. Put them together and count them all.

Watch me

2 beads and 5 beads make 7 altogether.

2 + 5 = 7

Swap them: 5 + 2 = 7.

Both number sentences give 7, so the order does not change the sum.

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 5

2. 4

3. 5

B

1. 10

C

1. 8

2. 8 If your child writes 2, they took 3 from 5. Both numbers are added here. Count on 3 from 5.

3. 6 If your child writes 9, they added the 3 and 6 on the right. The missing number goes with the 3 on the left, so it must be 6 to make both sides match.

4. 16

D

1. 7 If your child writes 8, they believed Ali. Swapping the numbers does not change the answer. Start at 4 and count on 3: 5, 6, 7.

E

1. Look for: Two sums using the same two numbers in a different order, with the same answer, and a reason such as swapping the numbers does not change the total.

Words to use

Say“Which numbers did you swap, and did the answer change?”
Instead of“Just tell them the answer is 7 because that is the rule.”

After the sheet

Put 2 spoons and 5 forks on the table. Say both sums out loud, spoons first, then forks first, and see if they match.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
