For the grown-up

Writing numerals 0 to 5 · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. The cat sat. Ask your child to point to the first letter and the last mark. Then check which sentence has both.

2. 1 Write a capital letter. · 2 Write the words. · 3 Add a full stop. Ask your child what comes first in a sentence. Start with the capital, then the words, then the full stop.

3. Small letter: sam, tom · Capital letter: Ali, Bea

B

1. 4, 5 Ask your child to trace the numeral they chose with a finger, without lifting. If the finger stops, that is the one with a lift.

C

1. 0, 1, 2, 3 If your child circles 4 or 5, ask them to trace it with a finger. Where does the pencil lift?

2. 0 → One smooth loop; 1 → One straight line; 4 → Needs a pencil lift

3. Lift your pencil: 4, 5 · One smooth movement: 2, 3

4. 1 Slant down to the left · 2 Draw across to the right · 3 Lift your pencil · 4 Draw a long line down Ask your child where the pencil lifts. The lift comes after the cross bar, before the last line down.

D

1. Look for: Says Kit is wrong, because the 4 needs a pencil lift to finish its cross. If your child says Kit is right, ask them to draw a 4 slowly. Ask where the pencil must lift to add the last line.

E

1. Look for: 2, 3, 4 and 5 each started at the top and sitting on the baseline, with a reason such as they look even and line up.

Words to use

Say“Show me where your pencil starts. Which numerals did you lift for?”
Instead of“That's wrong, try again properly.”

After the sheet

Draw a line on the back of an envelope. Trace each numeral 0 to 5 in the air first, then write it on the line.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
