Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. cross If they chose chair, say a chair is a thing, not a feeling. Point to the storm on the scale and ask which word matches it.

2. 1 A seed goes in the soil. · 2 A green shoot pushes up. · 3 The flower opens in the sun. If the flower came first, ask what has to happen before a flower can grow. Read the steps aloud in order.

3. Check If they chose Draw or Stop, ask what we do to our writing before we share it with someone.

B

1. Look for: Names hop, and says something like it sounds bouncy, quick or like a frog jumping. If your child names frog or log, read the rhyme aloud together and ask which word they keep saying.

C

1. Look for: Names tap, and says something like it sounds quick, busy or like a ticking clock. If they name tick or clock, read the rhyme aloud together and ask which word they keep saying.

2. yum If they circled pie or yummy, those appear only once. Ask which word comes again and again.

3. Said once: bike, fast, Ben, waves · Said again and again: zoom If they put bike or fast in the first column, ask how many times that word is said. Only zoom comes back again and again.

4. Look for: A funny line about a rushed morning with one word repeated three times.

D

1. Look for: Poems can be about everyday things like school, so a school poem is still a poem. Kit thinks poems must be about made-up things. Remind them that John Foster writes funny poems about everyday school life.

E

1. Look for: Says yes and gives a reason, such as readers know the rush or the repeated words sound silly.

Words to use

Say“Which word came back again and again? Read it out loud and say it a little louder each time.”
Instead of“Tell them the poem is funny and move on to the next page.”

After the sheet

Make up a three-line rhyme at home about getting ready for bed, using one word three times. Read it aloud and talk about why the repeats sound funny.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
