Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. Ola and I saw a fox. If your child picks the first card, the name and the word I have no capitals. Say: Ola is a name, and I is always a capital.

2. ? If your child picks the full stop, ask: is this sentence asking something or telling something? Questions end with a question mark.

3. glad If your child picks Ali, say: Ali is the name of the person. The feeling word is the one that tells how Ali is.

B

1. Look for: Something the child pictures from the moon line, written in their own words.

2. Look for: One feeling word and a reason linked to the moon line.

C

1. Look for: A picture or feeling about the rain drum line, with a reason.

2. Look for: A picture or feeling about the night cloth line, with a reason.

3. Look for: A picture or feeling about the kite bird line, with a reason.

4. Look for: A picture or feeling about the sea glass line, with a reason.

D

1. Look for: Says that people can feel different things about a poem and that all of them can be right. If your child agrees with Ali, point to the scale. Many different feelings sit on it. Ask: have you ever felt differently from someone else about the same thing?

E

1. Look for: A new line that makes a picture, plus two different feelings a reader might have.

Words to use

Say“What picture did the line put in your mind? And how did it make you feel? Both answers can be right.”
Instead of“That is not what the poem means. Let me tell you the right feeling.”

After the sheet

Read a line from a book at home together. Each of you says one picture and one feeling, then you explain why. Swap turns.
