For the grown-up

Where a Story Comes From · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. The dog ran home. If they pick the lower-case one, ask which letter starts a sentence. Then check the end mark.

2. because If they pick 'and', ask: why did Mia go to bed early? 'Because' gives the reason, so use it.

3. 1 Mia woke up. · 2 Mia ate her breakfast. · 3 Mia went to school. If the order is wrong, ask what Mia does first in the morning. Then ask what comes last before she leaves.

B

1. the author's own life

C

1. bronze

2. fencing

3. the author's own life

4. S. K. Ali If they pick Faizah or Asiya, explain that these are the sisters in the story. They are not the writers.

D

1. Look for: Says that not all Muslim women wear a hijab, and that wearing one is a personal choice. If they only say the claim is 'wrong', ask: do all Muslim women wear one? Some do and some do not.

E

1. Look for: A reason such as the girl seeing herself in the story, or a real person sharing her feelings.

Words to use

Say“Where did this story come from? Who was it about?”
Instead of“Tell them the answer straight away.”

After the sheet

Ask your child to pick something blue at home. They tell you one true thing about it and where it came from.
