Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. pond your child picked walked, which is an action word. Ask: can you point to it? A noun names a thing or place, so point to the pond.

2. ! If your child picked a full stop, ask them to read the line aloud with a shout. Strong feeling and shouting need an exclamation mark.

3. cub's den If your child picked cubs' den, that puts the apostrophe after the s, which means many cubs share the den. Ask: how many cubs own it?

B

1. a frog on a rock

C

1. a pond If your child picked a hill, the words already say that. Ask: which thing is on the map but not in the sentence?

2. a tree

3. a hill If your child picked the otters, the words name them already. Ask: which symbol on the map is not in the sentence?

4. a park

D

1. Look for: Names one thing in the picture that the words do not say, such as the hedgehog, the lantern or the dusk sky. If your child writes that the picture only repeats the words, ask them to look at the hedgehog and the lantern. Those are not in the words.

E

1. Look for: One sentence that names a map symbol not mentioned in the given words, and fits the story.

Words to use

Say“What did the picture show that the words did not? How do you know?”
Instead of“The pictures are just there to make the book look nice.”

After the sheet

Choose a picture book at home. Cover the words, describe the picture aloud, then read the words and say what the picture added.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.

One more sheet comes with a StudyDen plan, in teaching order:
