For the grown-up

Partner Letter Shapes · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. Agree who makes which part

2. Look for: One helpful thing said to a partner, such as sharing out jobs or encouraging them. If your child writes nothing, ask: what did you say before you started, so you both knew your job?

3. a clear space away from windows

B

1. 1 Talk about who makes which part · 2 Make the shape and hold it · 3 Check it from the front · 4 Try again if it looks back to front If the making comes first, they skipped planning. Ask them to say who does what before they move.

2. Check which way it reads from the front, then fix it If they pick the smaller letter, they think size fixes a mirror image. Ask: which way does the watcher read it?

C

1. Shapes can be made lying, sitting, kneeling or standing. If they pick standing only, they think shapes must be upright. Show a lying L from the floor and ask them to try it.

2. Body tension → Squeeze your muscles so you don't wobble; Balance → Keep your weight steady so you don't fall; Coordination → Move body parts together smoothly

3. 1 Set your feet or hands, weight steady · 2 Squeeze your tummy and legs · 3 Pick one spot to look at · 4 Breathe out slowly and keep going If your child picks a spot to look at before squeezing, accept it, as both orders work. Feet or hands are set first and the slow breath comes last.

4. Look for: Three times in seconds, each from 0 to 10, written for Try 1, Try 2 and Try 3.

D

1. Look for: Stays with the partner: talks about what went wrong, agrees who does what, and tries again together. If your child says work alone, ask: who will tell you if your letter looks backwards? Plan the next try together and have another go.

E

1. Look for: Two named actions such as agreeing who does what or talking about the plan, each with a reason linked to communication or trust.

Words to use

Say“Which letter did you make best, and what did your partner do to help you?”
Instead of“Stop wobbling and stand up straight.”

After the sheet

On a soft rug, with a clear space and a grown-up watching, make the letter T together with your child. Say who does what, then check it from the front.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
