Today I can use known facts and splitting to add two-digit numbers efficiently.

A Look back3 min

  1. 1.

What is 10 more than 34?

  2. 2.

    7 + 2 =

    72
  3. 3.

    14 − 5 =

    145

B Watch me, then you4 min

Ola knows 4 + 3 = 7. She uses that fact to work out 40 + 30 without counting in ones.

Watch me

4 + 3 = 7 is a known fact.

4 tens and 3 tens make 7 tens.

So 40 + 30 = 70.

Now you
  1. 1.

    6 + 2 = 8, so 60 + 20 =

    6020
  2. 2.

    5 + 4 = 9, so 50 + 40 =

    5040

C Your turn6 min

Use a fact you know, or split a number into tens and ones.

  1. 1.

    2 + 5 = 7, so 20 + 50 =

    2050
  2. 2.

    4 + 5 = 9, so 40 + 50 =

    4050
  3. 3.

    56 + 3 =

  4. 4.

    56 + 4 =

Say it out loud: What changed between each sum? Which number did you split?

D Spot the mistake3 min

Sam says: “5 + 2 = 7, so 50 + 20 = 52.”
5020
  1. 1.

    What is 50 + 20 really?

E Think deeper3 min

  1. 1.

Ben says 38 + 2 and 30 + 10 make the same total. Is he right? Write the fact that helps you.

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 44

2. 9

3. 9

B

1. 80 If your child writes 62, they added the 2 to the 60 and skipped the tens. Ask: how many tens are in 20? Then add the tens.

2. 90 If your child writes 9, they forgot the tens. 9 tens is 90, so the answer has to be in the tens.

C

1. 70

2. 90

3. 59 If your child writes 53, they added 3 to the 50 and left out the 6. Split 56 into 50 and 6, then add 3 to the 6.

4. 60 If your child writes 54, they added 4 to the 50 and left out the 6. Look at the ones: 6 and 4 make 10, so 56 + 4 = 60.

D

1. 70 If your child writes 52, they kept the 2 as 2 ones: 50 + 2. But 20 is 2 tens, so 5 tens and 2 tens make 7 tens, which is 70.

E

1. Look for: Yes, both make 40. A fact such as 8 + 2 = 10, or 3 + 1 = 4 for the tens.

Words to use

Say“Look at the ones digits first. Which fact do you already know?”
Instead of“Count on in ones from the first number.”

After the sheet

Put 15 buttons or pasta pieces in two groups, like 10 and 5. Add the groups quickly, then try a different split.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
