Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 12

2. 44

3. 16

B

1. 6 If your child writes 2, they have given the number of piles, not the number in each pile. Ask them to point to one pile and count inside it.

C

1. 3

2. 2 If your child writes 3, they have given the number of piles. Ask how many counters are inside one pile.

3. 2 If your child writes 4, they have given the number of piles. Ask them to point to one pile and count inside it.

4. Unequal

D

1. 3 If your child writes 4, they counted the counters in one group, not the groups. Count the bars: there are 3 groups.

E

1. 2, 3, 4 and 6 If your child leaves one out, share the 12 counters into that many groups and check that none are left over.

Words to use

Say“Which number tells you how many groups, and which tells you how many in each group?”
Instead of“Just tell them the answer.”

After the sheet

Tip 10 buttons or raisins onto a plate, sort them into two groups in any way, then sort them a second way and compare.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
