Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 40

2. 15

3. 34

B

1. 22p If your child writes 14, one 10p coin has been counted as 2p. Point to each coin and say its own value before adding.

C

1. 15p If your child writes 8, they added 5 and 3 instead of counting the coins. Count in fives: 5, 10, 15.

2. 20p

3. 30p If your child writes 20, the 10p coin has been left out. Find the 10p coin first and count it.

4. 21p If your child writes 17, two of the 2p coins were missed. Move each coin to one side as you count it.

D

1. 5p If your child writes 2, they chose the bigger-looking coin. Ask: which number is printed on each coin?

E

1. Look for: A way to make 10p with 2p and 5p coins, such as five 2p coins or two 5p coins.

Words to use

Say“Which number is printed on each coin? Start with the biggest one.”
Instead of“Count them one by one, starting with the smallest coin.”

After the sheet

Put some coins from a purse in a row, or write 2, 5 and 10 on paper circles. Sort them into groups and count the biggest group first.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
