Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 8

2. 10

3. 8

B

1. 4 If your child writes 3, that is the number of pots. Share the 12 pencils into 3 pots one at a time, then count one pot.

C

1. 4

2. 2 If your child writes 4, they have done 8 ÷ 2. That is the answer for 2 groups, not 4 groups. Count the groups in the bar first, then share.

3. 3

4. 4 If your child writes 3, that is the number in each group. Count in 3s along the line to 12, then count the jumps.

D

1. 3 If your child writes 4, they have worked out how many are in each group, 12 ÷ 3 = 4. The first number in 3 groups of 4 tells you how many groups there are.

E

1. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 If your child leaves out 1 or 12, ask: can one group hold all 12? Can 12 groups each hold 1?

Words to use

Say“Which number tells you how many groups, and which tells you how many in each?”
Instead of“Just tell them the answer.”

After the sheet

Put 12 buttons or raisins on a plate and share them into 3 equal piles, then into 4 piles. Each time, say: 12 is equal to ___ groups of ___.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
