For the grown-up

One ten, ten ones · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 7

2. 8, 9

3. 4

B

1. 10

2. 1 Writing 10 here means your child is counting straws, not bundles. Hold up the bundle and ask how many bundles there are.

C

1. 10

2. 2

3. 13

4. 1 ten (10 is more than 9)

D

1. Look for: No. The ten rod and the 10 cubes are the same amount, 10. Grouping them doesn't change how many there are.

E

1. Neither. They both have 30. If your child says Amy, the loose straws look like more. Untie one of Sam's bundles and count the straws together.

Words to use

Say“How many ones is that ten worth?”
Instead of“Count them all again.”

After the sheet

Bundle real things at home: 10 pegs in a sandwich bag, 10 spoons with a hair band. Ask how many tens, then how many ones.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
