Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 8

2. 9

3. 43

B

1. 28 If your child writes 18, they added 4 to 14. Doubling means 14 + 14. Split 14 into 10 and 4 and double each part.

C

1. 22 If your child writes 12, they added 1 to 11. Doubling means two equal groups of 11, so 11 + 11.

2. 24

3. 32 If your child writes 26, they doubled the 10 to get 20 but added the 6 without doubling it. Double 6 as well, so 20 + 12 = 32.

4. 30

D

1. 28p If your child writes 24p, Kit's mistake has been copied. The 10 was doubled to 20, but the 4 was not doubled. Double 4 is 8, so 20 + 8 = 28p. Put two lots of 14p side by side and count the coins.

E

1. 16, 17, 18, 19, 20

Words to use

Say“Split the number into tens and ones, then double each part.”
Instead of“Tell them to count every single object in both piles one by one.”

After the sheet

Put 12 buttons in one pile, make a second pile the same, and count all 24. Then try 13 and 15.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.

The rest of this unit

4 more sheets come with a StudyDen plan, in teaching order:

  1. Doubling and halving pairs(with a plan)

  4. Doubles and halves at work(with a plan)
