Today I can compare two fractions by first checking they describe the same whole.

A Look back3 min

  1. 1.

Circle the fraction that shows the shaded part.

    1/43/44/4
  2. 2.

    What is 1/4 of 20?

    20
  3. 3.

    3/8 + 2/8 = /8

B Watch me, then you4 min

Ali has 1/4 of a bag of 12 buttons. Bea has 3 of the 12 buttons. Do they have the same amount?

Watch me

Split the whole into 12 equal parts. Shade 3 of them: that is 3/12.

Put the 12 parts into 4 equal groups of 3. One group is 1/4 of the whole.

So 3/12 and 1/4 are the same amount of the same whole.

Now you
  1. 1.

3/6 is the same as 1/. Write the missing bottom number.

C Your turn5 min

The bar is one half every time. Write the same half with a new bottom number.

  1. 1.

    1/2 = /4

  2. 2.

    1/2 = /6

  3. 3.

    1/2 = /8

  4. 4.

    1/2 = /10

Say it out loud: What changed in each row, and what stayed the same?

D Spot the mistake3 min

Kit says: “1/3 and 4/12 can’t be equal, because 3 and 12 are different numbers.”
  1. 1.

Are 1/3 and 4/12 equal? Circle your answer.

Yes, they are equalNo, they are different

E Think deeper4 min

  1. 1.

Which numbers from 1 to 12 could be the bottom number of a fraction equal to 1/4? Write them all. Then tell your grown-up how you know.

How did it feel?

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 3/4

2. 5

3. 5

B

1. 2 If your child writes 3, they have halved the 6 instead of finding the new bottom number. Count the shaded parts: 3 of 6 is half, so the bottom is 2.

C

1. 2 If your child keeps the top number as 1, ask: how many quarters make a half? Top and bottom must change together.

2. 3 If your child only changes the bottom number, ask them to cut a strip into 6 equal parts and shade half of it.

3. 4 Ask your child to fold a strip into 8 equal parts and count how many parts make half the strip.

4. 5 Ask your child to cut a strip into 10 equal parts and shade half. How many parts are shaded?

D

1. Yes, they are equal If your child says no, ask: how many equal groups of 4 fit into the 12 parts? One group is 1/3 of the whole. Check the whole first.

E

1. 4, 8, 12 If your child misses some, ask them to shade 2 of 8 equal parts and check it matches a quarter. Then try 12.

Words to use

Say“Ask first: are both fractions cut from the same whole?”
Instead of“Tell them 3/12 is bigger because 12 is bigger.”

After the sheet

Fold one paper strip into 4 equal parts and another into 12. Lay them side by side and see which parts line up.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
