Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 20

2. 1/4

3. 5

B

1. 5 If your child writes 12, they may have taken 3 away from 15. A fraction shares the whole. Share 15 into 3 equal boxes.

C

1. 2 If your child writes 4, they may have halved the whole. The bottom number says 4 equal parts, so share 8 into 4.

2. 5 If your child writes 16, they took 4 away from 20. A fraction shares the whole, so divide 20 by 4.

3. 9 If your child writes 40, they added 4 to 36. Share 36 into 4 equal parts instead.

4. 13

D

1. 5 The bottom number tells you how many equal parts to make, not the answer. Share 20 into 4 equal parts and count one part.

E

1. 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 If your child misses 8 or 12, ask them to share 24 into 8 groups of 3, then into 12 groups of 2, and check each one.

Words to use

Say“What is the bottom number telling you to do?”
Instead of“Just tell them the answer is the bottom number.”

After the sheet
