Whole and tenths parts

Year 5 · Maths · about 20 minutes
Answers are on the grown-up page

Today I can split decimals with tenths into a whole part and a tenths part, and write equations that balance.

A Look back3 min

  1. 1.

3 tenths are shaded. How many tenths are not shaded?

  2. 2.

    12 − 5 =

    125
  3. 3.

Ana has 25p. She spends 10p. How much is left? p

    10p10p5p

B Watch me, then you4 min

Mia's stick is 6.4 cm long. Split 6.4 into a whole part and a tenths part.

Watch me

The 6 whole centimetres are the whole number part.

The shaded bar is 4 tenths, which is 0.4.

So 6.4 = 6 + 0.4, and both sides are worth 6.4.

Now you
  1. 1.

    Zara's ribbon is 3.9 m long. 3.9 = 3 +

    3

C Your turn6 min

Fill in the missing part. Look at what changes from one row to the next.

  1. 1.

    5.2 = 5 +

    5
  2. 2.

    5.7 = 5 +

    5
  3. 3.

    + 0.7 = 6.7

  4. 4.

    0.7 + = 6.7

Say it out loud: What changed from one row to the next? Does moving the box to the other side change the answer?

D Spot the mistake3 min

Noah says: “6.8 = 6 + 0.8 is wrong, because the answer has to come after the equals sign.”
6
  1. 1.

Is Noah right? Circle your answer.

Yes, the answer has to come after the equals signNo, both sides are worth 6.8

E Think deeper3 min

  1. 1.

Write as many equations as you can using 9.2, 9 and 0.2 once each, with + or −. Write some with the single number on the left, like 9.2 = 9 + 0.2.

    9

For the grown-up

Whole and tenths parts · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 7

2. 7

3. 15p

B

1. 0.9

C

1. 0.2 If your child writes 2, they have read the 2 as 2 ones. The 2 sits after the decimal point, so it is 2 tenths: 0.2.

2. 0.7

3. 6 If your child writes 6.7, they have copied the total into the box. Adding 0.7 to 6.7 makes more than 6.7, so take 0.7 away from 6.7 instead.

4. 6 If your child writes 0.7, they have found the tenths part again. The box needs the whole number part, which is the 6 ones.

D

1. No, both sides are worth 6.8 The equals sign means both sides are worth the same. Work out 6 + 0.8, then point to 6.8 on the other side and check they match.

E

1. Look for: True equations using 9.2, 9 and 0.2 once each, with both addition and subtraction, and some written with the single number on the left of the equals sign. If your child stops at the addition equations, ask whether 9.2 − 9 = 0.2 also works. Then ask if 9.2 = 9 + 0.2 is still true with the answer on the left.

Words to use

Say“Which part is the whole number, and which part is the tenths? Show me both sides are equal.”
Instead of“Just tell them the answer is 0.2.”

After the sheet

Write 4 and 0.3 on two sticky notes with a + between them. Say what they make together, then write it both ways: 4.3 = 4 + 0.3 and 4 + 0.3 = 4.3.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.

The rest of this unit

4 more sheets come with a StudyDen plan, in teaching order:

  1. Tenths as multiplication(with a plan)
  2. Decimal detectives with tenths(with a plan)
  3. Lining up decimal columns(with a plan)
  4. Rounding to the nearest whole(with a plan)

Every Year 5 maths worksheet

The worksheets plan opens a printable sheet for every lesson in Years 1 to 6, each with its answers on a separate page for you. It costs £6.99 a month or £59 a year for the whole family, with no free trial.

The full StudyDen plan adds the lessons themselves, marked as your child works, with the worksheets included. It is 7 days free, then £29.99 a month.

Both start with a free account; you choose the plan when you sign up.
