Watch me

One jar has 15: 1 ten and 5 ones.

30 + 15 = 45, so there are 45 sweets.

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 46

2. 35

3. 20

B

1. 52 If your child writes 42, the ten from the 12 ones was lost, so 40 + 2 = 42. Ask: how many tens are in 12 ones?

C

1. 36

2. 42 If your child writes 32, the ten from the 12 ones was lost, so 30 + 2 = 32. Ask: how many tens are in 12 ones?

3. 48 If your child writes 38, the ten from the 18 ones was lost, so 30 + 8 = 38. Split 18 into 10 and 8, then multiply each part by 3.

4. 54

D

1. 92 If your child writes 20, the tens digit was treated as ones. The 2 in 23 is worth 20, not 2. Split 23 into 20 and 3: 4 × 20 = 80 and 4 × 3 = 12, so 80 + 12 = 92.

E

1. 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 If your child misses some, ask them to multiply just the ones digit by 3. Does the answer go past 9?

Words to use

Say“Split the big number into tens and ones, then check whether the ones answer has a ten in it.”
Instead of“Multiply the whole number in your head and hope it is right.”

After the sheet

Make 3 piles of 14 buttons or dried beans. Swap any 10 loose ones for a tens pile, then count the total together.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
