Split 75 into 60 and 15.

60 ÷ 3 = 20, and 15 ÷ 3 = 5.

Add the partial quotients: 20 + 5 = 25.

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 56

2. 43

3. >

B

1. 22 If your child writes 4, they have added 2 and 2. 6 tens shared by 3 is 2 tens, which is 20. Then share the 6 ones to get 2 more.

C

1. 12 (40 ÷ 4 = 10 and 8 ÷ 4 = 2)

2. 17 (60 ÷ 4 = 15 and 8 ÷ 4 = 2) If your child gets 19, they found 8 ÷ 4 as 4. Share 8 ones into 4 groups: each group gets 2, so the answer is 15 + 2.

3. 22 (80 ÷ 4 = 20 and 8 ÷ 4 = 2) If your child gets 18, they wrote 80 ÷ 4 as 16. 80 is 8 tens, and 8 tens shared into 4 groups is 2 tens, which is 20.

4. 23 (80 ÷ 4 = 20 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3) Splitting 92 into 90 and 2 leaves parts that do not divide cleanly by 4. Try a split where both parts are in the 4 times table.

D

1. 32 Dev wrote 3 for 90 ÷ 3, but 90 is 9 tens, so the answer is 3 tens, which is 30. Writing 3 and 2 gives 5, which is wrong.

E

1. Look for: Both partitions add to 84 and each part divides exactly by 4, so the partial quotients add up to 21.

Words to use

Say“Split the big number into parts you know, then add the answers.”
Instead of“Share out one at a time until it is all gone.”

After the sheet

Put 48 dried beans on a plate, split them into 40 and 8, share each part into 4 cups, then add the two amounts in one cup.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
