Today I can multiply a unit fraction by a whole number and say what each number means.

A Look back3 min

  1. 1.

    2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 =

  2. 2.

How many quarters make one whole?

  3. 3.

4 rows of 6 counters make counters altogether.

B Watch me, then you4 min

Ola cuts a cake into 5 equal slices. She eats one slice, then one more, then one more. How much cake has she eaten?

Watch me

Each part is 1/5. Three parts are shaded.

1/5 + 1/5 + 1/5 = 3/5

So 3 × 1/5 = 3/5. The 3 counts the parts, and the 5 sets their size.

Say it out loud: Which part of each row stayed the same, and which part changed? What did the change do to the answer?

D Spot the mistake3 min

Kit says: “3 × 1/4 means 3 wholes cut into quarters, so the answer is 3/12, which is 0.25.”

What is 3 × 1/4? Circle the answer.

E Think deeper3 min

Lena writes 4 × 1/7 and 1/7 × 4. She says they must be different answers because the numbers are swapped.

  1. 1.

Is Lena right? Explain what the 4 and the 1/7 each tell you.

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 10

2. 4

3. 24

B

1. 2/6

C

1. 2/8 If your child circles 1/8, ask how many groups there are. The 2 says there are two groups, so the answer has two parts.

2. 3/8 If your child multiplies the bottom number as well, ask what the 8 tells you. The 8 stays the same because it says how big each part is.

3. 3/8 If your child changes the bottom number, ask which number counts the groups. Writing the factors in the other order does not change the answer.

4. 3/5 If your child picks the answer with a bigger bottom number, ask whether each part got smaller. Each part is still one fifth, so there are three fifths.

D

1. 3/4 If your child circles the answer that changes the bottom number, ask: when the bottom number says the size of each part, does it change? The picture shows one quarter, and three of them make three quarters.

E

1. Look for: Lena is wrong: the answers match because multiplication is commutative. The 4 counts the parts, and 1/7 is the size of each part. If your child says Lena is right, ask whether the 4 changes its meaning when it moves. Count the shaded parts in the picture and say what each one is.

Words to use

Say“Which number tells you how many parts, and which tells you how big each part is?”
Instead of“Multiply the top and bottom numbers together.”

After the sheet

Fold a strip of paper into 6 equal parts. Shade 2 parts, then shade 3 parts. Write each as a sum and as a multiplication.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.

The rest of this unit

3 more sheets come with a StudyDen plan, in teaching order:

  1. Groups of fractions(with a plan)
  2. Fractions times whole numbers(with a plan)
  3. Fractions past one whole(with a plan)

Every Year 5 maths worksheet

The worksheets plan opens a printable sheet for every lesson in Years 1 to 6, each with its answers on a separate page for you. It costs £6.99 a month or £59 a year for the whole family, with no free trial.

The full StudyDen plan adds the lessons themselves, marked as your child works, with the worksheets included. It is 7 days free, then £29.99 a month.

Both start with a free account; you choose the plan when you sign up.
