99 is the last two-digit number. 100 is the first three-digit number.

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 57 If your child writes 48, they added 1 to the ones. Ten more changes the tens digit.

2. 99

3. 60 If your child writes 69, they took away 1. Ten less changes the tens digit.

B

1. 101 If your child writes 100, they counted only 3 steps. Say each number out loud as you go.

C

1. 100

2. 110 If your child writes 101, they added 1 instead of 10. Each step in 10s adds ten.

3. 100 If your child writes 90, they took away 20. Each step back in 10s takes away 10.

4. 99 If your child writes 100, they have not moved. Each step back is one less.

D

1. 100 If your child writes 910, the 9 and the 10 were put side by side. 900 plus 10 is 910, but 99 plus 1 is 100.

E

1. Look for: Yes: 102, 101, 100 and 99 are four steps back from 103.

Words to use

Say“Say the last two-digit number, then the first three-digit number, when you cross 100.”
Instead of“Tell them the answer straight away.”

After the sheet

Lay out 20 buttons in a row. Touch each one and count aloud from 91 to 110, slowing down as you cross 100.
