The 3 is 3 hundreds, so it is 300.

The 4 is 4 tens, so it is 40.

300 + 40 + 2 makes 342.

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 45

2. >

3. 60

B

1. 436 If your child writes 406, the 3 tens have gone. That is 400 + 6. Each part needs its own column, so put 3 in the tens.

C

1. 235

2. 230 If your child writes 23, the zero has gone. 23 is 20 + 3, so the tens are in the wrong place. Ask how many ones there are.

3. 205 If your child writes 25, the hundreds and the empty tens have gone. 25 is 20 + 5. Put 0 in the tens so the 2 stays in the hundreds.

4. 680 If your child writes 68, the hundreds have gone. 68 is 60 + 8. Write the 6 in the hundreds and the 0 in the ones.

D

1. 307 If your child writes 37, the 3 has been read as 3 tens. 37 is 30 + 7. The 3 sits in the hundreds, so keep the 0 in the tens.

E

1. Look for: 307, 370, 703 and 730 listed; 037 is not a 3-digit number so it does not count; a 0 is never put first.

Words to use

Say“Read the number column by column. Which column is empty, and what goes in it?”
Instead of“Just tell them the answer, or say 'You know the rule, just write it.'”

After the sheet

Lay out three cups labelled Hundreds, Tens and Ones. Put 2 buttons in Hundreds, none in Tens and 5 in Ones. Say the number, then build 250.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
