Today I can rearrange an addition bar model into four equations, with the sum first or last.

14 and 9 are the addends. 23 is the sum.

14 + 9 = 23, and 9 + 14 = 23 too.

Put the sum first: 23 = 14 + 9, and 23 = 9 + 14.

A bar model has parts 17 and 19 and a whole of 36. Which equation is true? Circle your answer.

    36 = 19 + 1719 = 36 + 1736 + 17 = 1917 − 19 = 36

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 50

2. 300

3. 40

B

1. 36 = 19 + 17

C

1. 7 If your child writes 25, they added 9 and 16. Ask which number is the whole. The whole is 16, so 9 must be taken away from it.

2. 9 If your child writes 23, they added 16 and 7. The sum 16 is the whole, so the missing part must be smaller than 16. Try covering the 7 and see what is left.

3. 16

4. 70 If your child writes 250, they added 160 and 90. The whole is 160, so the other part is what is left after taking 90 away.

D

1. 25 Count on 15 from 10 together. Both sides then make the same number, so the equation is true and Kit is wrong. The sum can go first.

E

1. Look for: Two addends that add to 32, then four equations: two with the addends first and two with 32 first.

Words to use

Say“Which number is the whole, and which numbers are the parts?”
Instead of“Just tell them the answer is the number after the equals sign.”

After the sheet

Use 3 small toys. Make a group of 2 and a group of 1, then say the total both ways: 2 + 1 = 3 and 3 = 2 + 1.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
