Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 6

2. 17

3. 10

B

1. 12 If your child writes 9, they have only added 3 + 6 and missed the last 3. Add the double first: 3 + 3 = 6, then 6 + 6 = 12.

C

1. 11

2. 12 If your child writes 10, they have stopped after the double. Add the last 2 to 10 to get 12.

3. 13 If your child writes 11, they have only added 5 + 6. The 2 still needs adding. Use the near double: 5 + 6 is one more than 5 + 5, so 11. Then 11 + 2 = 13.

4. 13

D

1. 12 If your child writes 13, they have copied Kit. Swap the order to 5 + 5 + 2. Then 5 + 5 = 10, and 10 + 2 = 12.

E

1. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

Words to use

Say“Which two numbers could you add first to make it easy?”
Instead of“Add them in the order they are written, without looking for a pair.”

After the sheet

Make three small piles of socks or coins. Find two piles that match or are one apart. Add those, then add the third pile.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
