One metre is 100 cm.

80 is less than 100.

So Kit’s plank falls short of one metre.

For the grown-up

One Metre, 100 Centimetres · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 60 If your child writes 16, they added 10 and 6. Six tens means six bundles of ten, so count the bundles.

2. 70

3. 70

B

1. shorter

2. longer If your child circles shorter, the 120 may have been read as small. 120 cm is more than 100 cm, so it is longer than one metre.

C

1. 100

2. 70 If your child writes 17, they added 10 and 7. Seven lots of 10 cm make 70 cm.

3. 10

4. 50 If your child writes 250, they added 100 to 150. The 150 cm already holds one metre, so take 100 away.

D

1. = If your child writes >, they think the number 100 makes it bigger. 1 m is the same length as 100 cm, so the sign is =.

E

1. Look for: Passes one metre, because 20 cm is extra on top of 1 m, or 120 cm is more than 100 cm.

Words to use

Say“Hold the metre stick next to it. Is it more or less than the stick?”
Instead of“Tell them 100 cm must be bigger because it is a bigger number.”

After the sheet

Before you measure, guess if a door, a sofa and a bag are shorter or longer than one metre. Then check each one with a tape measure.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
