Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. 75

2. 63

3. <

B

1. 39

C

1. 56 If your child writes 26, they added only the 5 ones and skipped the 30. Ask them to add the tens column too.

2. 157

3. 337

4. 337 If your child gets a different answer from the row above, the sum should not change. Check each addend and add the ones column again.

D

1. 59 If your child writes 34 or 25, they picked an addend. The sum is the total, so it is bigger than both addends.

E

1. Look for: Two 2-digit addends, their correct sum, and an explanation that the sum is the total of the addends.

Words to use

Say“Which numbers are the addends, and which one is the sum?”
Instead of“Just tell them the answer.”

After the sheet

Make two small piles of pasta or buttons. Count each pile and write the two numbers one above the other. Draw a line under them, then ask which number will be the sum.

Tick what your child got right in StudyDen. Anything missed comes back in a later Look back box, so there's no need to redo the sheet.
