For the grown-up

Word jobs in sentences · 2 minutes to read

Answers, and what a wrong one tells you

A

1. barked

2. Doing word: sing, jump · Naming word: garden, school

3. happy → describing word; dog → naming word; runs → doing word

B

1. cold

2. Those your child may circle 'dogs' because it is a thing. Ask which word comes just before the noun and tells us which dogs.

C

1. light your child may circle 'is' or 'on' because they are short. Ask which word comes straight after 'The'.

2. brightly your child may circle 'shone' because it is the verb. An adverb can tell how, when, where or how much. Ask which word tells how the light shone.

3. light your child may circle 'lamp' because it is a thing. Here 'light' is the doing word. Ask what we do to the lamp.

4. Light your child may circle 'rain' because it names something. 'Light' describes the rain, so it is the adjective.

D

1. adverb your child may have chosen adjective because Leo did. Adjectives describe nouns. 'Hard' tells how 'worked' was done, so it is an adverb. Ask: what does the word describe?

E

1. Look for: Two sentences: fly as a doing word (for example, birds fly south), and fly as a thing that comes after a determiner such as a or the.

Words to use

Say“Which word came just before it? Is it doing something, or is it a thing?”
Instead of“Just learn the word class list by heart and do not worry about the sentence.”
